Does Muscle Really Weigh More Than Fat?

I’m sure you’ve heard that muscle weighs more than fat by now. Am I right? Well, that’s not exactly an accurate statement.

So…Does Muscle Weigh More Than Fat?

If you have 1 pound of muscle and 1 pound of fat, they both weigh 1 pound. Right? What that statement refers to is the amount of space each takes up. Muscle is much leaner and dense than fluffy, chunky fat is.

So if you lose 10 pounds of fat, there is going to be a much more dramatic mass reduction in your body than if you lose 10 pounds of muscle.

There is a huge difference between 1 pound of fat and 1 pound of muscle. Fat is approximately 3 times the size of muscle.

The easiest example I can think of is this:

  1. Take out 1 slice of bread and put in on the counter.
  2. Now take out 3 slices of bread and stack them into a pile next to the lone slice.

The 1 slice of bread represents 1 pound of muscle and the 3 slice pile represents 1 pound of fat. It’s pretty crazy when you have the visuals out like that. Am I right?

Did you actually do this exercise or are you trying to just picture it in your head because you don’t want to get off your ass and do it? If you didn’t do it, then get up right now…the internet will still be here when you get back. It’s really important to do this exercise.

Great, now think about how many extra pounds of fat you have on your body. Multiply the bread in your head or in real life if you actually have that much bread on hand.

It’s pretty freaky if you’re 20 or more pounds overweight, right?

Takeaway: Muscle and fat weigh the same, but muscle is much more dense than fat. Fat takes about 3 times as much space as a pound of muscle does.

Keep in mind that I’m not a professional, the ratio of muscle to fat could be a little off. Still, this should give you a better idea of the difference between a pound of fat and a pound of muscle.

Stop sabotaging your weight loss by waiting for a fresh start!

Stop sabotaging yourself by waiting for a fresh startI get why people think they need to wait for a fresh start, really I do. It’s the beginning of a new day, week, month or year—the possibilities for a winning streak are endless.

Whether your fresh start is beginning on a Monday, the 1st of the month, the new year…it doesn’t matter. The main point is that you are waiting, not acting right now.

Say it’s Thursday and you decide that’s it, Monday things are going to change. You’re going to eat better, exercise and do what needs to be done. So what does that say about the next 4 days? Is it possible that you’re going to eat a ton of shit between today and then?

It only gets worse from there, the potential damage to your health and the addition of new fat is endless. Waiting for the beginning of a new month? That can be weeks depending on when you decide. Waiting to get your fresh start with the new year…maybe even make it your resolution (again)?

How long are you waiting for a fresh start?

Stop sabotaging yourself and your weight loss waiting for a fresh start. You don’t really need a fresh start to start losing weight and getting healthier—it’s just an excuse people come up with to avoid taking action now.

How many times have you sabotaged yourself waiting for a fresh start? I’ve done it hundreds of times and I’m done. I will not wait for a new day, week, month or year. You shouldn’t either.

Are we in charge of our bodies, or is the calendar?

Even if it’s an hour before dinner and you ate crap all day, you can start doing better now. You can make a decision and take action.

What if dinner is already cooking and it’s nowhere near healthy? Maybe you should start tomorrow so that you don’t waste food…not even close. Just have less than you normally would have, maybe even half. It doesn’t have to be a huge change, it’s okay to start small. It’s better than never starting at all, isn’t it?

Sure starting with small changes isn’t going to make you lose a ton of weight super-fast. But isn’t it better than not losing any weight or even gaining weight?

Takeaway:

You create you own fresh start from changing the way you do things. It’s a beginning to a new life that matters, not the beginning of a new day/week/month/year. Stop wasting time and get off your ass!

Will you make your own fresh start or continue sabotaging your weight loss?
